Getting the Band Back Together!

The Canberra Times Fun Run has been a regular event for the TriHards over the years - in fact the report for the 2008 was one of the very first race reports to be published on the site. So, it seemed kind of fitting for a reunion, of sorts, for the TriHards.

You see, there have been many changes in the TriHards ranks of late - real life imposing itself on our athletic fantasies and team members distracting themselves with such mundane things as coupling, marriage and children. But quite a few came together for our traditional end-of-season dinner, which was followed by the Canberra Times Fun Run.

The 2015 edition provided a number of options for competitors, with 5, 10 and 14km courses. Naturally, Junior and the Cyborg chose the 14km option. Engine and his new offsider, both experienced trail runners, also elected to do the 14km. The newly-minted Mr & Mrs McFly rounded out the entries by running in the 10km.

In an unfortunate turn of events, Junior - the only TriHard who had actually undertaken a training program specifically designed for the event had a bike accident in the days leading up to the run, injuring his ribs (but we’re happy to report that is bike is fine!) Consequently he had resigned himself to walking the event.

So, the 14kers set off at the start time of 8:00 on a crisp Canberran morning which, thankfully, wasn’t one of the subzero days of which they’d had so many. (Truly, locals were amazed it wasn’t snowing!) The Cyborg took off following his own target pace of around 5:00 per kilometre - which was in fact much closer to 4:30 (he’s very excitable at the start of a race). Engine and Gearbox were a little behind and Junior, at the back of the pack, elected to try a light jog rather than walking - why waste all that training.

The 14km course is the same as that of the 10, with runners cruising up Adelaide Avenue, then down onto State Circle - the climb out of which is probably the hardest climb of the 10. Shortly thereafter the courses diverge, with the 14kers running up to Parliament House, which is another slight climb, before heading back down, past Old Parliament House and back onto King’s Avenue.

With the 10km race starting half an hour after the 14, it is around this point that the two fields combine - and the Cyborg began to keep an eye out for McFly, who he suspected may be towards the front of the field. With a good pace still going, the Cyborg pushed on towards the finish, wisely choosing not to sprint through the new BMW sprint section.

Shortly after the Cyborg struggled over the line, Engine powered his way through the finish chute, looking as though he had just warmed up. As was to be expected, Gearbox joined shortly thereafter and, remarkably soon after “I’m just going to walk” Junior arrived, informing the crew that after he learnt to ignore the pain he just kept running.

Once the McFlies arrived (they were slowed by McFly’s regular breaks throughout the race) the TriHards set off to do what they do best - drink coffee and reflect on what a great event it was, with everyone keen to return next year and perhaps improve on their times, or perhaps change the end of season dinner to a start of season carb-load....

Yes, that’s it. What do you mean not enough detail? You want a blow by blow account of the race? Well, how about a kilometre by kilometre account:

1 km

Cyborg: Slow down, slow down, there are 13 more kms to go! You’re going to regret this pace!

Engine: 180 180 180 (he was running to cadence, not pace)

Gearbox: Don’t stop! Don’t stop!

Junior: Bugger it! Ouch! I’ve trained for this! Ouch! I can at least jog. Ouch!

Engine: 180 180 180

Gearbox: Yay!

Junior: Yay!

(9km)

McFly: I don’t think I can hang on until the end! Sorry, I have to run ahead!

Mrs McFly: “You’re actually going to use a toilet?”
