The Cyborg Earns his Shirt

Bib from festival
The bib!

The Stromlo Running Festival has been running for a few years now, with 2012 being the third time the Cyborg has entered, but only the second time he’s run; having had to pull out in 2011 due to injuries. Of course, his greatest regret in pulling out in 2011 was that he’d bought the fantastic 2XU Stromlo Running Festival shirt, and couldn’t wear it! (No, that’s the rule: you can’t wear an event shirt unless you’ve participated in the event!)

With excellent stalls, talks and lots of events, it really was a festival with an fun and friendly atmosphere. And, turning up to a festival like this is kind of like going to Dreamworld - you’ve got to go on all the rides! Unfortunately, the Cyborg was already booked on the Saturday morning with the iAdventure race, so had to pass up the cross country run; however he did still manage to enter to events: the mountain run and the 10km Lightning Strike (yes, there was a 30km version, but that’s almost a marathon - have you seen the Cyborg?)

Sometimes Lightning Does Strike Twice

This year the shorter of the two Lightning Strike runs (you didn’t expect the Cyborg to do the long run, did you?) had changed markedly from previously years. For starters, they’d knocked a kilometre off the course, which was nice; unfortunately the change also included a full kilometre of steady climbing! The elevation profile on display rivalled that of the Mountain Run (though, admittedly, it was a longer run squeezed into a shorter scale, so looked steeper). Another advantage of the new course was that it changed to an out and back course - starting and finishing around the pavilion and event hub. So there was no need to organise buses and the like.

Running Up that Hill

In a change from the last time the Cyborg entered the Stromlo Running Festival, the mountain run was held later on Saturday; which was very fortunate for the Cyborg indeed, as it meant he had time to recover from the iAdventure race in the morning. And what better way to warm down from an adventure race than running up a mountain? A 3.6km run, with a vertical climb of 180m on gravelly firetrail. The elevation profile says it all really.
