It’s not a real website unless there’s a links page. So, here are some links that may interest you. Click on the orange heading bar drop the list of sites; click on the headings to see a description.
The TriHards often see the back of the various AddVenture training teams as they head off into the distance in many of the events we do. But they’re not just event teams-they do training as well, and run some excellent weekend activities full of handy hints and coaching goodness. Doc Runaway attributes much of her success in the 2010 Wild Endurance to a weekend training camp she did with them.
This site has one of the most comprehensive calendars for adventure racing you’ll ever find! If you’ve got some free time, there will be an event on there for you!
Need some gear for your next race? Or, just want some top quality gear for training or getting out there? This is the mob to get in touch with. They sell tried and true gear at a good price, and invest in the adventure racing community by sponsoring competitors such as the TriHards.
This the AROC Sport web site. The AROC people run heaps of adventure races, as well as paddling and training sessions throughout the year. The Paddy Pallin series is an excellent set of races, with the option of doing either a novice or classic course - they make a fantastic introduction to adventure racing. When we grow up, we’d like to do some of their more serious races, like the Edge of Reality
Blackheart Events is another up and coming adventure racing mob. They have a number of sprint adventure races and mountain bike events all over Australia. They’re well worth a look!
An excellent resource for the potential adventure racer; it contains calendars, tips, information about events and forums through which you can advertise for that elusive third member of your team (or, you know, you could try one of us!)
The Canberra Climbing Association is Canberra’s local climbing organisation. They lobby governments for climbing, as well as providing a number of services for local climbers; they’re worth joining just for the discounts you’ll receive in local climbing stores.
Canberra Indoor Climbing now has two gyms; one on the northside in Mitchell and the other in Hume on the southside; so there’s a gym near you! A great way to keep up the skills and strength through the cold winter months, or just as excellent cross-training.
Chockstone is a great site for climbers; it contains heaps of great articles and forums to hook up a climbing partner, and is associated with an online climbing gear store.
The Canberra Off-Road Cyclists association run regular time trials and races throughout Canberra, help maintain some of the fantastic single track around the ACT and help the biking community through lobbying goverments. If nothing else, joinging them will support local riders!
Cycle Education is a local Canberra company providing cycling education for one and all. The TriHards found even a short course very beneficial! When you think about how much you spent on your bike, doesn’t it make sense to spend a bit more learning how to use it properly?
The Berm is an online forum for the Canberra Biking community. You can find people to ride with, pick up some tips, swap, sell and buy gear. Well worth checking out! But don’t lose your whole day there!
This mob organise some great events and tours around the Southern Highlands of NSW. They also run training courses.
Australian Canoeing is the peak body for canoeing and kayaking in Australia. They certify paddlers to standards, and provide insurance to people and organisations in the kayaking industry. The site is mainly focussed on the canoeing sports side of things, but still well worth checking out.
The Burley Griffin Canoe Club operates in Canberra, providing some training, time trials and, most importantly, some friendly people to go paddling with!
Jervis Bay Kayaks are trainers and outfitters located in Huskisson in Jervis Bay. They run the full suite of Australian Canoeing sea kayak courses in the fantastic waters of Jervis Bay. They also run regular paddle trips so you can get a bit of safe expedition experience in your yak!
As the name suggests, Kangaroo Valley Safaris operate in Kangaroo Valley. They’ll hire you kayaks and canoes to get out on the Shoalhaven or Kangaroo Rivers for paddles of a day, overnight, or a week if you like! And there are some great places to check out down there; have a read of our Paddle Plans to find out more!
The New South Wales Sea Kayaking club has been operating for quite some time and provides the benefits of insurance, organised trips and cheap tuition. In addition to all of that, their site contains a wealth of information, and the all-important classifieds!
This is a great sea kayaking forum site full of tips, tricks and great trip ideas. Be careful though, you may well lose days here!
A Canberra-based kayaking and water sports outfitter. They have a great range and knowledgeable staff who will help you get the right gear, not the most expensive!
The annual Gong ride is now an institution. You have a choice of either a longer 96km ride from St Peters in Sydney to Wollongong, or taking a shorter option from Heathcote to Wollongong (56km). The short ride is the more picturesque, but you can do the longer one if you feel like a bit of a challenge (and truly want to become one with your seat). The event (it’s not a race!) is very well organised, with trains put on to get you to and from the event and plenty of stalls and the like at Wollongong for you to get your coffee fix at the end (there’s also a Gelato and coffee stand atop Bald Hill - a good point to remember!)
Pedal Power is a Canberra-based organisation which promotes riding in and around Canberra. As well as being advocates for riders, they offer regular rides, maintenance courses and a level of insurance. They’re worth joining just to support the organisation who supports you, as a rider.
We’ve only done a couple of rogaines; but we’ve liked what we’ve done (there are a few reports in the events section). We started out doing them to hone our navigation and general rogaining skills for adventure races, but they’re excellent standalone events to do too (though, they have greatly improved our rogaine and navigation skills). And they put on a fantastic bbq at the end of the race!
If you have any suggestions, please feel free to email them to us!
